French is spoken by perhaps around 76 million people as their first language, and many times more (perhaps as many as 280 million) as their second or third language. Most native French speakers live in France itself, or in Belgium, Canada or Switzerland, but there are also native French speaking communities in a number of other countries too, including Italy, Luxembourg, Haiti, and the United States of America.
If you have plans to visit a French-speaking country or region, whether for a vacation or business purposes, you are sure find that knowing the language is useful skill. It is also true that many people find learning languages are stimulating 
intellectual challenge, and in the case French, knowing the language can also help you in accessing and understanding French-language history and culture.
Many people have experience of learning languages at school. Because of these, we tend to often think that learning process must be done in a classroom environment. While going to French classes is of course an option for adult learners, it is also possible to learn the French language in the comfort of your own home, with the help of your computer.
This is because there are today a wide selection of computer-based French courses available – some of these are delivered as CD-ROMs, but others can be accessed via the Internet, which of course means that you do not have to wait for them to be delivered by mail after signing up.
There are so many different courses available, and people each of their own particular preferences, so it would be silly for me to recommend that you choose a particular one. My suggestion instead is to look at each of the options, and find the one that suits you best.
For example, many courses include audio downloads which you can listen to from your computer, but if you would like to listen to the audio on your iPod or portable MP3 player, you should obviously look for audio in MP3 format which you transfer from your computer to these devices.
